Why the Name Change?

It is with great excitement that we announce a major change for CityReach Johnstown.

We launched September 20, 2014 as the Johnstown branch of CityReach Network, a church planting organization based in Pittsburgh, and it has been a privilege to come under the faith covering of such an incredible team of pastors and spiritual fathers. The guidance, stability, and resources they have provided have greatly benefited this ministry.

After almost three foundational and exciting years, we sensed it was time to step into our next chapter: to become a “sovereign church,” that is, to be a self-governed church organized under the Church of God (Cleveland, TN). So with much prayer and counsel and with the blessing of CityReach Network, we have officially become New Hope Community Church.

Under our senior leader Pastor Josiah Smith, the mission of our church will remain the same: knowing Jesus and making Him known. Our Christian statement of beliefs will also stay the same, and we will remain affiliated with the Church of God denomination and submit to their authority.

Jon Shaffer, who has been our oversight with CityReach Network, commented, “I have loved working with Pastor Josiah and his team as they have faithfully served under the banner of CityReach Network. They have proven themselves effective and able, and it is with great excitement that we now release this ministry to continue the work of the Kingdom in Johnstown. Of course we will stay in close connection, and I can’t wait to see what God will do as New Hope Community Church continues to follow Him!”

This exciting new season for us will include major new milestones, a church board, staffing updates, and other developments. We enthusiastically thank you for your prayers and support in this new season, and if you would like to contribute financially, you can securely give online here. Thank you.

We invite you to explore our site to learn more about our story and our team, or to reach out to us. We continue to gather every week on Saturday nights at 6pm, to keep church casual and accessible for people of all walks of life. We believe the church is a family… and we love welcoming people home and inviting them to be part of the family. Of course if you are new to the Johnstown area, new to church, or just want to swing by, we would love to welcome you home! See you Saturday for the best night of your week!
